The Vietnam experience was hellfire, privation, blood, sweat, and death. To the ground soldiers enduring it on the battlefields, the helicopter pilots flying above seemed a privileged few - removed from the "real" war, fighting at a distance from its harshest realities. But Bruce Lake's story invites a closer look.
Bruce R. Lake flew hundreds of helicopter missions under hostile fire, earned 42 Air Medals and the Silver Star for a heroic rescue mission, and watched squadron brothers leave on missions they never came back from. He did it all while quietly wrestling with the growing realization that the war he was fighting so bravely had no intention of being won.
This is his story - told through his personal journal, daily letters to his young bride, and recollections from his year, month, and day in country. Together they form an intimate, unfiltered portrait of a man who loved flying, loved his country, and refused to look away from the truth of what he witnessed in the landing zones and in the back of his helicopter.
Lake was no ordinary officer. An enlisted Marine selected from the ranks for flight school, he earned his wings and his commission through grit and ability. What he brought back from Vietnam wasn't just medals - it was a testimony that belongs in the permanent record of American military history.
This expanded second edition includes revised content, a new dedication, and an exclusive digital companion that brings additional context to Lake's remarkable journey.
From the painful adjustment back to civilian life, through hours of boredom and moments of sheer terror, to an honest reflection on the meaning of it all - the reader will fly with Lake among helicopter pilots 1500 feet over Vietnam.
