89 Seconds to Midnight: How Close Are We to Global Catastrophe?
In January 2025, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock to 89 seconds before midnight, the closest humanity has ever been to symbolic global catastrophe. This isn't just about nuclear weapons anymore. We face an unprecedented convergence of existential threats: climate tipping points that could make Earth uninhabitable, artificial intelligence systems racing toward capabilities that could surpass human control, biological research that could unleash the next pandemic, and nuclear arsenals being modernized for a new age of conflict.
89 Seconds to Midnight takes readers inside the escalating risks that have pushed humanity to the brink. Drawing on exclusive interviews with climate scientists, AI researchers, nuclear weapons experts, and former military officials, this book reveals how four seemingly separate threats, nuclear weapons, climate change, biological risks, and artificial intelligence are interconnecting in ways that amplify each danger.
But this is not a book of despair. While unflinchingly honest about the severity of our situation, 89 Seconds to Midnight also uncovers reasons for hope. From cities leading climate action to scientists working on AI safety, from communities building resilience to young activists demanding change, solutions are emerging at every level of society. The book explores how we might build "antifragile" civilizations that don't just survive shocks but emerge stronger from them.
Part urgent wake-up call, part practical roadmap, 89 Seconds to Midnight argues that we are living through the hinge of human history, the moment when our species either learns to govern itself wisely in the face of global catastrophic risk or succumbs to the contradictions of our own success. The clock is ticking, but as this book demonstrates, we still have time to choose a different path.
With the next decade being crucial for humanity's long-term survival, this book provides both the knowledge needed to understand our predicament and the tools needed to help solve it. Every second counts, but every second also represents an opportunity to pull back from the brink and build a future worthy of our highest aspirations.
The future is not predetermined. The question is what we will do with the time we have left.
