by Frank Thilly (Author)
What connects Socrates to Kant, Descartes to Hegel, and the ancients to the problems of our own day? Philosophy began here, for many. In this classic history of Western philosophy, Frank Thilly traces the great conversation of ideas from classical Greek philosophy through the systems of medieval, early modern and nineteenth-century thought. Written as an introductory philosophy textbook yet rich enough for lifelong readers, it offers a clear, continuous account of how questions of truth, value and knowledge have been shaped across centuries of debate. A History of Philosophy serves both as a philosophy survey book and as a dependable philosophy reference book, guiding readers through the main Western philosophical traditions in their historical setting. Thilly balances biography with analysis, showing how issues in ethics metaphysics epistemology and logic emerge, develop and sometimes clash. Ideal as philosophy for college students and as a core philosophy course textbook in ancient and modern philosophy, it remains accessible to general readers seeking a structured path into complex thought. First published in the early twentieth century, Thilly's work stands as an influential precursor to later classics by Bertrand Russell Western Philosophy and Will Durant Story of Philosophy, illuminating the same grand landscape from an earlier vantage-point. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
