A Mission To Gelele, King Of Dahome is a book written by Richard F. Burton. It is a detailed account of Burton's journey to the Kingdom of Dahomey, in present-day Benin, in the late 19th century. The book describes the customs, traditions, and political structure of the Dahomey people, as well as their brutal practice of human sacrifice. Burton was sent on this mission by the British government to establish trade relations with the Dahomey kingdom, which was known for its powerful army and its reputation for being a difficult place for foreigners to enter. The book provides a vivid description of Burton's journey through the kingdom, his interactions with the king and his court, and his observations of the people and their way of life. In addition to its historical and anthropological value, A Mission To Gelele, King Of Dahome is also a fascinating adventure story, as Burton and his team had to navigate treacherous terrain, evade hostile tribes, and overcome numerous obstacles to reach their destination.
