In 1937, Eli Cole comes to the Blue Ridge under a name that isn't his, one crew assignment away from the Georgia law that's hunting the man he used to be. The Civilian Conservation Corps offers steady work and a place to disappear, until the survey crew starts hearing things drift up from the hollow below their camp, and Lost Cove turns out to be watching them back. Sarah Miller has dug ginseng in these mountains her whole life and knows exactly what walks them after dark: the Raven Mocker, a thing that doesn't kill so much as recognize you, and once it has, you have seven days before it collects. As Eli's borrowed name and Sarah's old knowledge collide, the two of them are pulled into a reckoning that's been waiting in these ridges far longer than either of their troubles, one that will cost them everything they've been running from, and everything they've been running toward.
