In the Eighth Jeff Chaussier adventure, Jeff has the chance to see himself as others see him. The story is narrated by his cast of colorful friends, each in his own voice and from the unique point of view each holds about Jeff.
Jeff, Rita, his almost wife, and the children have been living in New York. That black day in September had repercussions for the whole country. Jeff and his wife, Bryna, must deal with a devastating loss. A Chaussier takes action, so Jeff, with Bryna by his side, returns to New Orleans to see if her twisted father's plans have reached from the grave to create more evil. Returning to New Orleans means Bryna has to deal with her past. In the course of that, she arrives at a new sense of herself that changes her reltaionshp with Jeff. Bryna, now his wife in more than name, for the first time, shares the adventure.No longer the distressed damsel, she is a participant in her own right who undertakes a perilous investigation on the campus of LSU.Though the action begins with Jeff and Rita in New York and winds through New Orleans where Jeff and his friends seek information in an excursion that delves into a Bourbon Street crawl where Bryna and a "Loretta," a Cupcake performer, go places unlike any Jeff has before . Besides being a character study of Jeff, Bryna, and their friends, the action moves in its climax from New Orlean to the Mississippi River and the swamps of Jefferson Parish where more than Jeff's life is at stake.
