Pitbull popular culture The pit bull became a symbol of courage and resilience in the United States in the 20th century. They appeared in commercials and movies, and even served as mascots for various sports teams. Pit bull ownership by celebrities such as Helen Keller and Theodore Roosevelt cemented the breed's place in American society. Difficulties and discussions Despite their great appeal, pit bulls have faced many problems and difficulties. Pit bulls were considered heroes in the early 20th century and were often described as loyal friends and protectors. Breed-specific laws In response to concerns about pit bull attacks, many cities and towns have enacted breed-specific laws (BSLs) specifically targeting pit bulls and other "dangerous" breeds. BSL sometimes includes ownership restrictions, forced sterilization, and even a complete ban on pit bulls. Studies have shown that BSL does little to combat dog attacks and instead focuses on punishing responsible dog owners. Pit bull today The pit bull is still the subject of myths and prejudices. Despite these obstacles, many Pit Bull advocates have done much to promote ethical ownership and dispel myths. It is true that pit bulls, like other dogs, are not naturally violent. Instead, their behavior is a product of their environment, upbringing and genetics.
