How does a small-town kid go from a garage band to the courtroom without ever planning it?
In An Accidental Lawyer, Michael Melton shares an unforgettable true story of improvisation, grit, and resilience. What began as a teenage dream to play one gig at a local skating rink became a five-year ride with a rock band that landed recording contracts, national TV appearances, and opened for legends like Jerry Lee Lewis. However, in 1968, everything changed. The Vietnam War claimed the life of their lead guitarist, and Melton found himself in the U.S. Air Force, working in military intelligence with Top Secret Crypto clearance in Washington, D.C.
What followed is a remarkable journey through unexpected careers. Melton became a brake-failing mechanic, a bond agent, a social worker, and a bar exam experimenter who passed the test. He eventually found himself working as a full-fledged attorney. Along the way, he never lost his humor or heart as he navigated public defense, city politics, and legal academia in Birmingham, Alabama.
Told with warmth, honesty, and sharp wit, this Southern memoir weaves together themes of service, music, justice, and accidental success. It is a must-read for veterans, music lovers, aspiring lawyers, and anyone who knows that life rarely goes according to plan. Sometimes, that is the best part.
Step into a life defined not by design but by saying yes, and discover what it means to become an accidental lawyer.
