"as the crow flies" is a collection of poems about the passage of time toward one's death and the continuing, comforting connections with life.
The poems reflect individual events encountered throughout one's lifetime.
I sometimes feel longing,
a memory of flesh,
a feeling
of moss-moist carpeted ground
beneath towering conifers
and the musty pepper flavor,
orange moist flesh,
of the chanterelle,
female in structure
funnels of blunt gills forming
vase-like open mouths.
And I long to return to a moment past,
to that summer day, to that sense of connection,
and to stay in that inhaled breath.
and to lay back down,
and begin my slow-release
into earth
gifting in my changing body
what the mushrooms will transform
