Berlin Underground is set mainly in Berlin, Germany. Key locations include the city's nightclubs, railway stations, backstreets, creative districts, Kreuzberg, Warschauer Strasse, the River Spree, old industrial spaces, and Teufelsberg spy station. I couldn't write a Berlin thriller without including Teufelsberg. It's one of the city's most fascinating places: an abandoned Cold War spy station once used by American and British intelligence, sitting on Devil's Mountain, a man-made hill built from the rubble of World War II.
What inspired Berlin Underground?
Berlin Underground was inspired by my love of Berlin, electronic music, and the city's strange mix of history, creativity, nightlife, and secrets. The nightclub scenes draw on Berlin's legendary music culture. The climax was inspired by Teufelsberg, with its tattered radar domes, graffiti, and Cold War atmosphere.
How does Berlin Underground compare to the Eden Black series?
Berlin Underground and the Eden Black books both share a love of travel, vivid locations, and fast-moving adventure, but they feel different in tone. Eden Black is a globe-trotting archaeological adventure series full of ancient mysteries, secret societies, and hidden relics. The International Detectives series is grittier, more personal, and more rooted in the real world.
Can Berlin Underground be read as a standalone?
Yes. Although Berlin Underground is International Detectives book three, after Kathmandu Killers and Hong Kong Gone, it works as a standalone missing person thriller because the central investigation is self-contained.
