The five teenagers faced swollen rivers, venomous snakes, relentless rain, and the challenges of surviving deep in the Mosquitia. But their greatest danger became their guide, whose increasingly erratic behavior escalated into threats to kill the boys and leave them in the jungle.
The expedition was later featured in Sports Illustrated and on ABC's American Sportsman. But the full story-and the chaotic childhood that led Jim into the jungle at seventeen-remained largely untold for 50 years.
