Black History: A Collection of Facts, Inventions, and Inspiration is a rich, accessible celebration of the achievements, milestones, and voices that have shaped Black history in America and around the world.
From the inventors behind everyday essentials like the ice cream scoop and the fire extinguisher, to the trailblazers who broke barriers in government, sports, music, and television, this book brings together the stories that are too often left out of mainstream history. Readers will meet figures like Benjamin O. Davis Jr., Hiram Rhodes Revels, Aretha Franklin, and Satchel Paige, alongside lesser-known pioneers whose contributions paved the way for generations to come.
Beyond individual achievements, this collection explores Black history through a broader lens, examining state-specific histories in Texas and South Dakota, the global celebration of Black History Month, and dozens of surprising facts that add depth and nuance to the American story. Chapters on inspirational quotes from leaders, artists, and activists offer wisdom and reflection alongside the historical record.
Complete with discussion questions, activities, and a detailed timeline of key events, this book is designed for readers of all ages, students, educators, and lifelong learners alike, who want an engaging, well-organized resource for understanding and celebrating Black history year-round.
As author Shirley Ann Porter reminds us through the words of Maya Angelou, featured throughout the book: "The more you know of your history, the more liberated you are.
