What happens when a veteran journalist's brain decides to rewrite his vocabulary?
In Brainstorm, Adrian Robson chronicles his unexpected journey from a carefree sports editor in Bermuda to a patient undergoing awake brain surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Diagnosed with an oligodendroglioma, Adrian's life is turned upside down-but not without a profound sense of humor.
When the tumor is removed, Adrian wakes up to a bizarre new reality: his brain and his mouth are no longer on the same page. Suddenly, everyone is named "Neville," ordering a cappuccino becomes an impossible puzzle, and innocent sentences turn into hilarious, unintended insults.
But this isn't just a story about illness; it's a testament to the power of laughter, resilience, and the extraordinary people who help us survive.
Inside Brainstorm, you will discover:
- The Surreal Reality of Awake Surgery: What it's truly like to be conscious while a world-renowned surgeon navigates your brain.
- "Tumour Humour" Hilarious and heartbreaking real-life anecdotes about living with aphasia and the comedy of mispronunciations.
- Legendary Encounters: Inspiring reflections on meeting boxing icon Muhammad Ali, and the incredible Dr. Alfredo Quinones (Dr. Q), whose own journey from immigrant farmworker to neurosurgical pioneer will leave you in awe.
- A Refreshing Perspective: An unfiltered look at facing mortality, embracing vulnerability, and finding the light in the darkest of places.
Whether you are a fan of medical memoirs, seeking inspiration in the face of adversity, or simply looking for a deeply moving yet laugh-out-loud true story, Brainstorm offers a unique window into the resilience of the human spirit.
