I was born to a happy wolf family, but a cold and desperate winter changed everything.
Two moons ago, in the summer heat, I played in the lake with my sister White-Ears, where I caught fish with my superior skills and rubbed it in her face. We ran around the safe place and played hide-the-bone.
One moon ago, the air was colder, but I was stronger. We hunted every day with Ma and Pa and Scruff-Paw. I ate more elk than I could imagine.
I thought life would always be like this.
Then the snow came.
Cold. Wet. Hungry.
Ma is on edge. Pa and Scruff-Paw are arguing. The wind claws through my fur and bites my skin and my belly writhes. We don't eat for days on end. I can't stand to see my family like this, but there's nothing I can do.
One night, Pa leads us away from the safe place in a hurry. Soon, I can smell the danger, in the air and along the trunks of trees. The scent of stranger wolves who want to hurt us. Wherever we end up, I just want to keep my sister safe.
