Strategies for addressing bullying--ready when you need them.

Before bullying surfaces in your school, you need to be ready. This book is organized so you can find the answers you need to make meaningful changes in the way you prevent and respond to bullying.

The authors know the challenges educators face. Here they've distilled nearly 15 years of research into bite-sized chapters, with strategies and real-world examples to put ideas into action. You'll learn:

  • Prevention strategies to put in place now
  • How to distinguish bullying from other hurtful behaviors
  • The connection between cyberbullying and in-person bullying
  • Responses that work--and ones that don't

Bullying Today provides clarity on controversial issues and the complex relationships among your students. It will encourage and empower you to be the solution to bullying at your school and equip you with tools to promote a healthy and vibrant school culture.

"A common-sense practical approach by authors who have the knowledge and passion to help all who work with students."
Deb Bible, Educational Consultant
Hanover Park, IL

"This is a handy guide to lead schools in meaningful discussions about bullying. It offers best practices that will help educators create a positive bully-free atmosphere in the school environment and beyond."
Avis Canty, Instructional Technology Facilitator
Greenville County School District, Greenville, SC

Author Biography

Dr. Justin W. Patchin is a Professor of Criminal Justice in the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University and his B.S. in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He has presented on various topics relating to juvenile justice, school violence, policy and program evaluation, and adolescent Internet use and misuse at academic conferences and training seminars across the United States. His first book The Family Context of Childhood Delinquency explores the role of parenting in the prevention and intervention of serious delinquent behaviors of children. Since 2002, his research has focused on adolescent behavior online. His award-winning book Bullying Beyond the Schoolyard: Preventing and Responding to Cyberbullying (co-authored with Sameer Hinduja) examines the ways adolescents use technology to cause harm to their peers (and what adults can do about it). Dr. Patchin also co-authored Cyberbullying Prevention and Response: Expert Perspectives and School Climate 2.0: Preventing Cyberbullying and Sexting One Classroom at a Time with Sameer Hinduja. Their most recent book Words Wound: Delete Cyberbullying and Make Kindness Go Viral, written for teens, was published in December of 2013. He has also published in a number of academic and professional journals and magazines. Dr. Patchin has spoken at the White House and the FBI Academy, and has appeared on CNN, NPR, and in the New York Times to discuss issues related to teens use and misuse of technology.

Dr. Sameer Hinduja is a Professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University and Co-Director of the Cyberbullying Research Center. He is recognized internationally for his groundbreaking work on the subjects of cyberbullying and safe social networking, concerns that have paralleled the exponential growth in online communication by young people. Dr. Hinduja is one of a small number of researchers who attempt to use traditional theory and methods to understand nontraditional forms of wrongdoing - such as cybercrime and cyberdeviance. Indeed, this has increased the reach and readership of his work - which has consequently resulted in citations by those not only in Criminology and Criminal Justice, but also in other fields such as Sociology, Business Administration, Ethics, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Educational Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Communications, Psychiatry, Counselor Education, Special Education, Educational Technology, and Pediatrics. Dr. Hinduja studies have continually been well-received in the field as theoretically sound and rigorous, both by academics who cite them and by news columnists who write articles referencing his research. According to Google Scholar (http: //scholar.google.com), his articles have been cited over 4,500 times. His research has also been discussed or referenced in over 600 online news articles (including CNN, New York Times, Washington Times, Forbes, Yahoo News, USA Today, US News and World Report, and Chronicle of Higher Education) and has been featured on TV (including Anderson Cooper 360), radio programs (including NPR) and local news segments (including WPTV, WPBF, WESH, WFTV).
