Full Description (long description field)
Real tools. Real examples. Real profit.
Every plant has money sitting on the floor. It hides in downtime, in slow cycles, in the parts that never should have been bought, and in the constraint nobody has named out loud. The people closest to that money are the ones least likely to be handed the language to claim it.
Business Acumen for Manufacturing closes that gap. It teaches maintenance, operations, and reliability professionals how to translate what happens on the plant floor into the numbers a CFO funds: throughput, contribution margin, working capital, and EBITDA.
Built around the Floor to Finance Model, a four-level value spine connecting a single machine decision to the income statement, the book walks you from cost thinking to profit thinking one chapter at a time. You will learn how to find your true constraint, price an hour of downtime on that constraint, size the loss before you propose the fix, and build a business case that survives budget season.
Across 6 parts and 19 chapters, you will work through:
- How manufacturing money actually moves, from revenue to margin to cash
- Why contribution margin, not cost per unit, decides which projects get funded
- Finding and defending the constraint that sets the pace of the entire plant
- Pricing downtime, minor stops, speed loss, and quality loss in dollars
- Turning maintenance from a cost center into a documented profit lever
- Working capital, spare parts, and the cash tied up in your storeroom
- Building KPI scorecards executives read instead of ignore
- Writing the one-page business case that gets the check signed
A single running example carries through the entire book. A composite pet food plant with a case packer constraint, a $10 per bag contribution margin, and a 40,000 bag break-even gives you a full worked model you can map onto your own line. Every formula is illustrated, then repeated in Appendix A as a quick reference. Appendix B gives you the financial vocabulary in plain operating language. Appendix C lays out the 30 major losses so you know exactly where to look.
This is not a finance textbook, and it does not ask you to become an accountant. It is a field manual for the supervisor, planner, technician, engineer, and plant leader who is tired of watching good ideas die in a budget meeting.
Written by Joe Anderson, CMRP, CRL, co-founder of ReliabilityX and a manufacturing performance strategist with nearly three decades in industrial plants, this book gives you the one skill that changes how your work is valued: the ability to say what it is worth, in dollars, before anyone asks.
From wrench to wallet.
25 figures. Formula appendix, glossary, and the 30 major losses included.
