By Design: Leadership Reframed Through Neuroscience is a book that introduces a science-backed framework for understanding why organizations default to survival mode under pressure and what leaders can do to design something different.
Leadership consultant and organizational researcher, Dr. Katie Pritchett, opens with her own stories. With the same vulnerability she asks of the leaders she works with, she traces her personal experience of breaking deeply conditioned patterns, and the hard-won empathy that comes from knowing how difficult it is to disrupt what the nervous system has spent years learning to protect. Those stories, alongside more than two decades of leadership experience, are woven throughout the book to keep the science human.
Dr. Pritchett draws on qualitative research with over 100 senior leaders, her work teaching at a top-ranked business school, and years inside Fortune 500 organizations and entrepreneurial cultures to argue that culture change fails not because of poor strategy, but because organizations have a nervous system. Every individual leader, every team, and every organizational structure operates with a biological stress response that shapes behavior, decision-making, and culture at scale.
The Organizational Nervous System(TM) framework operates at three levels: micro (individual), meso (team), and macro (organizational). It gives leaders practical tools and operating design principles to recognize survival patterns, rewire leadership behavior, and rebuild systems that support sustained performance without chronic depletion.
This book is for senior leaders navigating AI disruption, workforce volatility, organizational change, and the accelerating pace of technological disruption who know that traditional change management models are no longer sufficient. It offers not inspiration, but intervention: observable markers, nervous system regulation strategies, organizational design principles, and language leaders can apply immediately.
