A chapter in Sigrun's family life was coming to an end. After six adventurous years in a most hospitable country in Europe, James was reassigned. As a civilian member of the US Air Force, he would accompany his commanding general to the Pentagon in Washington, DC. The chronological progress of time in history and family demands stark adjustment. Educational plans for the children, who actually were children no more, and the all-around expense of living in a world capital confronted the entire family with mind-boggling reality. For Sigrun, the change from "queen bee" to "worker bee" was a huge step in a direction not expected nor planned. Again, fate intervened and carried the decisions that were very different from the imagined plans for the future while living in England. Sigrun had started studies of German literature before the overseas assignment and was going in the direction of teaching at an American university. Now that would be another expense rather than managing the necessity of launching two offspring into careers and life. An opportunity was opened by a friend that would bring income through a new professional direction for Sigrun. She accepted the suggestion, molded work into a source of pleasure and wealth. They prospered until fate again took them on unexpected paths of challenge and pain. All fit into a picture for "better or worse." It remained a family history to be viewed either as success or failure.
