His regiment was the first Marine unit to return to the ancient city of Peiping (now Beijing) where they witnessed the last of old China and the rise of the Communist state. E. B. Sledge was a World War II veteran, author of With the Old Breed, and a professor of biology at the University of Montevallo, Alabama. He died in March 2001.
