Melville's Sumptuous Tribute to a New England Culinary Classic
Chowder is chapter fifteen from one of the greatest works of American literature, Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. It is so beautifully written, so descriptive and colorful, one can virtually smell the fishy, salt air and picture the warm interior of the Try Pots Inn. Curl up on a cold evening and taste the mouthwatering chowders of Nantucket's most famous fictional landmark in this homage to New England's classic dish.
This short work is part of Applewood's American Roots series, tactile mementos of American passions by some of America's most famous writers.
Author Biography
Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American novelist whose masterpiece Moby-Dick is considered one of the greatest American novels. Born in New York City, financial hardship forced him to leave school and seek work at sea, experiences that profoundly shaped his writing. His early adventure novels Typee and Omoo brought initial success, but Moby-Dick (1851) received mixed reviews and poor sales, devastating Melville. His subsequent works, including Billy Budd, were largely ignored during his lifetime. Melville spent his final decades working as a customs inspector in obscurity. Only in the 1920s did critics rediscover his genius, recognizing his complex exploration of good, evil, and obsession as foundational to American literature.
