With 25 moves in 23 years Connie Ellefson figured she had "travel light" down pat; after all, everything she owned post-college fit in her old Chevy Impala. Imagine her dismay when 7 years later it took a huge moving van to hold everything her young family had acquired.
A self-confessed organizing book junkie, Ellefson "tried them all," but the life of ease and order never seemed to stick, till at last several light bulbs went off:
- It's not the organizing method that matters most; it's the inspiration/motivation to do it. (Carrot? Stick? Which works better? Different for everyone.)
- The roadblock may be emotional or mental clutter that needs to go first (or even physical doldrums getting in the way).
- "Make it fun, and it's more likely to get done." Let's face it, decluttering and organizing is no picnic, but it can be! A good dose of humor can keep the molehill from turning into a mountain and make the journey to decluttered 6.5X - (approximately) - more pleasant.
And, as for the Rush!
Who would have thought that simple buzz we get when we declutter and organize a closet, room, or glovebox would have such a profound effect? Ellefson realized that endorphin rush we get from decluttering our stuff is the same one we get when we declutter our bodies or our minds.
And, that rush not only improves our immune system, it also shifts our energy. We can now see options that used to seem impossible, and remove our blocks to believing we could have those good things in our lives.
