The authors examine and compare Amazonian politics and policies under different administrations, concentrating on the main actors, policies and dynamics that have affected the region, as well as on the institutional and political environment in which deforestation processes were embedded in different periods. Eduardo Viola is a full professor at the Institute of International Relations (IREL), Universidade de Brasília, and a senior research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies (IEA), Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil.
