What if the one who teaches virtue could never show you how to practice it?
In Clitophon, Plato delivers a rare role reversal-one of Socrates' students publicly challenges him. Clitophon, once inspired by Socrates' stirring criticisms of Athenian corruption, now expresses frustration. While Socrates calls others to justice and virtue, he offers no clear path forward. Is Socrates a philosopher or merely a rhetorician?
This modern translation presents the complete dialogue with sharp clarity, retaining the ambiguity and psychological tension of the original. Clitophon remains one of Plato's most enigmatic works-brief yet bold in its critique. Whether seen as a literary experiment, a dramatic fragment, or a serious philosophical objection, it pushes readers to ask what true moral education really requires.
What You'll Discover in This Modern Translation:
- A Rare Critique of Socrates from Within - Witness a disciple openly question the master's value and method.
- A Short but Powerful Dialogue - A concise text that confronts major questions about the role of philosophy.
- The Mystery of the Unfinished - Engage with a dialogue that refuses to resolve itself, sparking deeper thought.
- Accessible, Clear Translation - Designed for modern readers without losing the complexity of Plato's voice.
- Reflections on Philosophy and Real-Life Action - Explore the tension between theory and practice in ethical living.
Whether you read it as a challenge, a confession, or a critique, Clitophon is a compelling and essential companion to Plato's more familiar works-a reminder that even the greatest minds are not beyond questioning.
