Libraries are exploring new roles and new partnerships on college campuses in order to improve students' experiences and enable learning outside the classroom. But other than faculty members, who are librarians' potential partners? The student affairs professionals are responsible for everything from residence halls to service learning to career exploration and make up one of the fastest growing groups in higher education - they are the experts in student development and the student experience.
However, librarians and student affairs professionals are largely unfamiliar with each other's roles in student learning. By using multiple focus groups, Long describes the experiences and perceptions of librarians and student affairs professionals at several four-year, residential colleges and universities. He identifies ways librarians and student affairs professionals share common values and can approach partnerships successfully - but also the barriers that result when these two groups don't fully understand each other's roles in student learning. This book is the perfect road map for librarians and student affairs professionals alike who are seeking partners for campus collaborations.
Author Biography
Dallas Long, Ph.D., is the Associate Dean for University Libraries at Illinois State University, where he oversees the libraries' access and technical services, special collections, and archives. Prior to his administrative position, Long served as the Residential Life Librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was embedded in the student affairs division and collaborated with student affairs professionals to provide workshops and programming for residential first-year students. His research explores collaborations between librarians and student affairs professionals to promote student success.
His research has been published in The College Student Affairs Journal, the Journal of Academic Librarianship, TheReference Librarian, and the Journal of Access Services. His dissertation won the Paul W. Vogt Higher Education Dissertation of the Year award and was featured in American Libraries in 2017. He earned his master's degrees in library science and education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his doctorate in higher education administration from Illinois State University. His 2016 dissertation, Librarians and student affairs professionals as collaborators for student learning and success, was featured as a notable dissertation of the year in American Libraries and won the 2017 W.
