With the German invasion of the Netherlands, the country's Jewish population faced an existential threat. Amidst fear, betrayal, and the silence of many, Pastor Leendert Overduin (1900-1976) chose another path. From his base in Enschede, he organized a clandestine network that expanded beyond his congregation and came to operate across the Netherlands. Dedicated almost exclusively to saving Jews, it became the first-and largest-organization of its kind in the country. Through his efforts and those of his collaborators, more than one thousand men, women, and children escaped arrest and deportation to the extermination camps.
Overduin's story did not end with the war. Known for his unwavering sense of duty, he went on to assist all who sought his help-including, controversially, families of Nazi sympathizers.Remarkably, he refused all recognition for his wartime work, declining every official decoration offered to him. As a result, his extraordinary role remained largely unknown to the wider public. This volume-and its first appearance in English-aims to document his life and make accessible to a broader readership a legacy that has too long remained in obscurity.
