Core Self Theory, a model developed by Dr. Saroyan during his years as an educator, consultant, and mental health clinician, is designed to help us understand ourselves and others as unique individuals. Understanding your deep inner self (the Core Self) allows for better social interaction within your environment and in your relationships with others. Being your Core Self means being true to yourself through honest self-expression, acknowledging internal reactions, and having the freedom to express yourself genuinely.
Whether you are a person struggling with your self-identity, a parent wanting to help your child be their true self, or a clinician, Core Self Theory can be applied in a variety of ways. Personally, it helps in self-understanding and self-acceptance. Socially, it influences our understanding, compassion, and acceptance of others' uniqueness. Therapeutically, counselors can use it to guide clients toward deeper insight with greater self-awareness.
The model explores the various parts of the Self and identifies different ways we behave when trying to maneuver in different social situations. Perhaps of the utmost importance, it leads to the acceptance of individuality, for oneself and others, and can lead to a more tolerant and inclusive society.
