by Juan Villa (Author)

"Coyotes en el cine fronterizo" analyzes the role of human smugglers in the context of the United States-Mexico border. Author Juan Villa identifies the different types and functions of human smugglers or "coyotes" by studying their characterizations in Mexican and American border-related film productions. This gives Villa's literary work a very unique and appealing perspective. The author reveals the ambivalent nature of "coyotes" as they help people without documents cross the border into the U.S., and by distinguishing the malevolent nature of the human smuggler as well as the nature of the benevolent one. This book offers a socio-historic background that begins with the establishment of the US-Mexico border to some of the most recent events related to the ongoing immigration debate between these countries. Furthermore, it explains how the first attempts to bring under control the flow of people across the then new 1951-mile border between Mexico and the United States originated the role of human smugglers, the evolution of their functions over time, and the changing dynamics of one of the busiest and controversial borders of the world. The book is written in Spanish, includes footnotes, some quotes in English, and detailed definitions, which makes it suitable for study and the general public. Juan Villa is an Arizona-based journalist, researcher and author. He holds a bachelor degree in journalism and a master's degree in Mexican American Literature. He has worked in print, radio and television media. His proximity to the US-Border and residency in Arizona --deemed the U.S. "ground zero" of the immigration debate-- further validates the authority of this his first book.
