The challenges currently faced by people with albinism in many African countries are becoming a focus for writers, artists, filmmakers, advocates and activists. This volume focuses on the power of cultural representations of albinism, taking into account their real-world effects and implications for social change.
Author Biography
Charlotte Baker is Professor of French and Critical Disability Studies in the Department of Languages and Cultures at Lancaster University in the UK. She is particularly interested in albinism and has published widely on understandings and representations of albinism in sub-Saharan Africa. She was awarded a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship and Wellcome Trust funding for the Albinism in Africa project, which she set up in 2014. She currently leads the ?Alternative Explanations: Disability and Inclusion Africa? project, in collaboration with Elvis Imafidon, which is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Global Challenges Research Fund.
Elvis Imafidon is Lecturer in Philosophy at SOAS, University of London. He holds a PhD and MA from the University of Ibadan and a BA from Ambrose Alli University. Elvis Imafidon is a person with albinism. His primary areas of research are the philosophy of medicine and healthcare and the philosophy of difference in Africa, with particular reference to albinism. He is author, among other books, of African Philosophy and the Otherness of Albinism: White Skin, Black Race (2019). He is Co-Investigator on the ?Alternative Explanations: Disability and Inclusion Africa? project.
