The second wave of US immigration--from 1870 to 1920--brought over twenty-six million men, women, and children onto American shores. JUNE GRANATIR ALEXANDER is on the faculty of the Russian and East European Studies Program at the University of Cincinnati. She is the author of Ethnic Pride, American Patriotism: Slovaks and other New Immigrants in the Interwar Era (2004) and The Immigrant Church and Community: Pittsburgh's Slovak Catholics and Lutherans, 1880-1915.
