Lisle Jerningham boards a London train in a state of shock, fleeing a house party after overhearing a devastating conversation. Her husband, Dale, has been married before-his first wife died in a climbing accident that conveniently saved his ancestral home. Now, whispers suggest Lisle's own recent near-drowning was no accident at all, and that Dale's need for her fortune may make her the next victim. In the railway carriage, she finds herself confiding in a stranger-a prim, knitting former governess named Miss Maud Silver, who listens with calm, professional attention.
As Lisle recounts the gossip, the quarrels, and the terrifying moment she was pulled from the sea, Miss Silver recognizes the signs of a mind pushed to its limit. But is Lisle's fear justified, or is she caught in a web of malicious rumour? With a card pressed into her hand and an offer of help, Lisle returns to Tanfield Court, where danger may be waiting behind every elegant façade. Miss Silver's quiet investigation is about to begin, and the truth behind a lucky widower's charm will prove more tangled than anyone suspects.
