What you see isn't always as it seems.
It's 1884. Emma, with young son Darcy, is now living in the township of Echuca in an idyllic setting on the banks of the Murray while Daniel continues to work the river on the PS Mary B.
But Emma is having trouble settling into town life. So, when her friend Henrietta Pickles begs her to investigate the death of her father-in-law, Emma agrees. After all, when both the Coroner and Sergeant Donovan believe Henrietta's daughter Janet is the only suspect, what else can she do? Yes, Janet is a dear friend, but her own sense of justice won't let her rest easy until the matter is set to rights and the real culprit behind bars.
Emma rallies family, new friends, and old enemies alike to the cause including Janey, her annoying but indispensable maid-of-all-work. But what are her chances of success? She's well known and respected among the rivermen, but that's hardly the best recommendation for facing down the town authorities or being accepted by the Ladies Benevolent Society.
Can she return Janet to her young family and the Primrose Tearoom before she's sent down to that grim and forbidding edifice the Melbourne Gaol? And what will Daniel have to say about her poking her nose into murder once again?
