A. from the University of Connecticut in 1959 and his M. A. from the University of Iowa in 1962. In 2000 he received an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, from Ashland University in Ohio and a second in 2009 from the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Founding director of both the Cleveland State University Poetry Center (1962) and the Creative Writing Department of the State University of New York College at Oswego in 1968, Lewis Turco was chosen to write the major essay on \"Poetry\" -- as well as a dozen other entries -- for \u003ci\u003eThe Encyclopedia of American Literature\u003c\/i\u003e in 1999 and was himself included in it.
