This book, the product of years of research by science journalist Laura G. De Rivera, explores the consequences of the inroads made by algorithms into our daily lives and answers some of the most pressing questions of our times: How far do algorithms reach? Who are the (semi-enslaved) workers who train them? Is there an aspect of our private lives they still haven't touched? Why do large platforms base their business models on fostering mental illness? Why can't AI ever be neutral? What is the danger of letting it make predictions? If something doesn't appear in our Google search results, does that mean it doesn't exist? How can we tell what's true and what's a lie?
Author Biography
Laura G. De Rivera empezó a escribir sobre naturaleza, libertad y derechos civiles en la sociedad digital en 1994, en PC Actual, cuando todavía estudiaba Periodismo en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Información de la UCM. Desde entonces, no ha dejado de hacerlo, en publicaciones españolas como Muy Interesante, Agencia SINC, Público, Interviú, El Mundo o Marie Claire o mexicanas como TecReview, Gatopardo, Milenio.
Ha vivido en Canadá, México, India y España. Ha recibido reconocimientos a su trabajo informativo, como el Premio Prismas Casa de las Ciencias al Mejor artículo periodístico 2020 (fue, además, Mención Honorífica en 2021), el Premio Boehringer Ingelheim de Periodismo Medioambiental 2022, el Premio IO-CSIC 2022, el Premio de Periodismo Accenture 2020, el Best Article of the Year de CASE Plantinum Awards Latinoamérica 2020 y el Premio ESET de Periodismo sobre Seguridad Informática 2019. También es editora en The Conversation España y cofundadora de Elemento21, Laboratorio investigación y divulgación científica en Español.
