Recently historians of both the Cold War and European integration have started to reassess the 1970s, but we still lack a comprehensive analysis of the period. Such an analysis was the main goal of a research project launched by a group of Italian scholars with the collaboration of foreign colleagues. The present volume is the outcome of the most significant results of the project, all based on extensive archival investigations. Among his recent publications are: \u003ci\u003eEuropean Union History. Themes and debates\u003c\/i\u003e (ed. with W. Kaiser, 2010); \u003ci\u003eLa Cenerentola d'Europa? L'Italia e l'integrazione europea dal 1947 a oggi, \u003c\/i\u003e (2010); \u003ci\u003eLes trajectoires de l'innovation technologique et la construction européenne. Des voies de structuration durable ?\u003c\/i\u003e (ed. with C. Bouneau and D. Burigana, 2010).\u003cbr\u003e Guia Migani, PhD in history of international relations, is a research fellow at the University of Padua. In 2010-2011 she has been post-doctoral fellow at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve. Her work focuses on relations between Europe and Africa, decolonisation, the Cold War and European integration. She is the author of \u003ci\u003eLa France et l'Afrique sub-saharienne\u003c\/i\u003e (2008) and co-editor with M. Affinito and C. Wenkel of \u003ci\u003eLes deux Europes\u003c\/i\u003e (2009).\u003cbr\u003e Antonio Varsori est Professeur d'histoire des relations internationales à la Faculté de Sciences politiques de l'Université de Padoue et vice-président du Groupe de liaison des professeurs d'histoire contemporaine auprès de la Commission des Communautés européennes.
