A missing father.
A body that is changing.
A truth that was never meant to surface.
Sixteen-year-old Kai Mendelsohn has spent her life medicated, monitored, and kept close. When her father brings her to a remote research station in Northern Québec and then disappears without a trace, Kai sets out to find him, leaving behind the only life she has ever known.
Beyond the station lies a world shaped by Indigenous lands, languages, and histories that have endured despite decades of forced assimilation and corporate control. Far from San Francisco and everything familiar, Kai joins a small group of local teens searching for families of their own, and together they push deeper into a territory where the past has not been erased so easily.
As she travels without her medication, Kai begins to experience strange disruptions. Words in languages long suppressed come to her unbidden. Memories surface that are not hers. And her body begins to change in ways she cannot explain. What she once thought was an illness may be something else entirely.
The truth about her father is tied to a system built on silence and a history that has been deliberately rewritten. As her condition worsens and time runs out, Kai must decide who she can trust, what she is willing to become, and how far she will go to uncover what was meant to stay hidden.
Some stories are buried to protect the world. Others are buried to control it.
Raw, urgent, and deeply rooted in place, Everclear is an upper YA coming-of-age novel about survival, resistance, and the reclaiming of language, memory, and self.
Perfect for readers of The Marrow Thieves and Under This Forgetful Sky.
