He received his PhD from the University of Basel in 2009 with a thesis on the anti-Russian colonial uprising in Central Asia in 1916. In 2016, he received his Habilitation in Basel with a study on German-Soviet relations in the 20th century. He is currently researching the history of the Aral Sea in the 19th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eMelanie Hussinger \u003c\/b\u003eM.A. is a research assistant at the Chair of Eastern European and East-Central European History at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg. Her research focuses Stalinism and political repressions in the European context, memory cultures and politics, and practices of remembrance and commemoration in post-socialist states.
