Anders Nordic has weathered plenty of hard winters on the Comanche Mountain Ranch. This one is different. A pack of wolves has come down from the Never Summer Mountains-a dozen strong, killing cattle and men alike. That alone would be trouble enough.
But Finn is wrong. Nordic's collie-loyal, steady, the dog that has ridden every mile of this life with him-is spooked in a way no wolf should be able to spook him. Something older than wolves has come to these mountains. Nordic's pregnant wife feels it. Her father feels it. They all hear it: a howling that gets inside you and doesn't stop.
With rustlers working the herd and a skeleton crew in the bunkhouse, Nordic has too many enemies and too many people to protect. He'll ride out anyway. That's who he is. But whatever is calling to Finn from the dark may be the one thing Nordic can't face with a Winchester and a cold eye.
