It seems that politicians and news pundits bring up the issue of abortion daily. Why? Because it's a significant point of contention in today's society. However, the sanctity of life is more than a contest between two sides and requires more than just a singular focus on abortion. Poverty, racism, disability, guns, and immigration are just a handful of topics that relate to the promotion of life. Of course, abortion deserves our attention in this time of fluidity in laws and in the varying ways the beginning of life is defined. In short, valuing human life requires an expansive and faithful perspective. Steven Timmermans, the executive director emeritus of the Christian Reformed Church in North America, is a psychologist and educator. He is the author of Followership: Faithful Following in an Age of Confusion (2022).
