Are you an investor who wants to make the world a better place while getting stronger returns? Are you an executive building a sustainable business and seeking increased revenue? Are you curious about ESG and what it means for your community or organization? Then this book is for you!

In Gambling on Green: Uncovering the Balance between Revenues, Reputations, and ESG, veteran financial services executive Keesa Schreane delivers a straightforward and practical guide for business leaders and investors navigating the world of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. As ESG debates and scandals find their way to both newspapers and 10-Ks, many managers feel lost and unclear about how to drive a sustainable approach. Readers will learn to identify corporate sustainability, recognize good corporate governance and social responsibility, and understand what makes a company an exemplary steward of the environment.

You'll also discover:

  • Why ESG investing is increasingly important and how the most successful asset managers are building their sustainable portfolios
  • How a business commitment to creating products with ESG in mind can benefit revenue efforts and increase customer loyalty
  • How to cut business costs through sustainable operations
  • Different sustainable bonds and how to leverage each to promote ESG while maintaining positive returns
  • How some companies have incorporated ESG with spectacular success and others have ignored it completely--sometimes, to their peril

With compelling case studies and thoughtful analysis, Gambling on Green is a must-read for anyone interested in how investors and corporations are shifting their focus toward environmental, social, and governance issues. This book will earn a place on the shelves of retail and institutional investors, executives, and board members looking for a roadmap to some of the defining corporate and social issues of our time.

Front Jacket

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) scandals are increasingly finding their way to the front page of major newspapers. Debates are being held out in the open as companies, managers, and investors try to find a way to sustainability without impairing their firms' profitability or growth.

In Gambling on Green: Uncovering the Balance Among Revenues, Reputations, and ESG, accomplished financial services executive Keesa C. Schreane delivers a practical and hands-on guide for investors and business leaders feeling lost in the fraught world of corporate ESG. You'll learn how to identify real corporate sustainability, recognize stellar corporate governance and social responsibility, and understand what makes a company a responsible steward of the environment.

In the book, the author explains why ESG investing is becoming increasingly important and how the most successful asset managers are building their sustainable portfolios. She also describes how business-wide commitments to creating products with ESG considerations front-of-mind can benefit revenue efforts and increase customer loyalty.

Gambling on Green presents concrete examples of businesses that have cut costs and gained competitive advantages with sustainable operations, and investors who have chosen responsible investing that leverages ESG while maintaining positive returns. Finally, you'll discover the difference between companies that have successfully incorporated ESG into the core of their business and those that have entirely ignored the issue and suffered the consequences.

Full of compelling case studies and incisive analysis, Gambling on Green is an essential resource for anyone interested in how corporations and investors are adapting to a new world in which environmental, social, and governance concerns increasingly dominate people's hearts, minds, and wallets. It is a must-have in the libraries of retail and institutional investors, executives, and board members looking for a blueprint to the crucial corporate and social issues of our time.

PRAISE FOR GAMBLING ON GREEN

"In Gambling on Green, Keesa Schreane provides an ambitious overview of today's rapidly changing business landscape where environmental and social challenges are now increasingly prominent. She makes a convincing case that smart companies need to look beyond a singular focus on maximizing short-term shareholder returns, both to reduce reputational risks and to score well in evolving ESG investor scorecards. Most interestingly she offers a range of examples, both positive and negative, of companies that are attempting to navigate this important but still very challenging terrain."
--MICHAEL POSNER, Obama Administration, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor; Director of the Center for Business and Human Rights at NYU's Stern School of Business

"Keesa makes a clear and compelling case for integrating ESG into your business. From finance to manufacturing, all teams have a part to play in helping to address today's environmental and social issues."
--MARY JANE MELENDEZ, Chief Sustainability and Global Impact Officer, General Mills

"Keesa Schreane's book is an important read for corporate leaders who are committed to advancing the needle on the most critical environmental and social issues of our time."
--MINDY LUBBER, CEO and President, Ceres

"All firms should be thinking about the positive and negative impacts they have on the environment and society, not just because this is imperative to address the climate crisis and social injustice, but also because they are relevant considerations for profitability and growth. This is therefore a good time for Keesa Schreane to be examining these issues."
--SARAH GORDON, CEO, Impact Investing Institute
