When Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston, South Carolina in September of 1989, I was there in the midst. I had heard a rumor that a little hamster was found, shivering, under a car the day after the hurricane. Somehow, in a Category 5 Hurricane with wind gusts up to 162 mph, the tiny creature had managed to survive. This story of survival has intrigued me for decades and inspired this book.
