Nearly a century ago, the framework was laid for a stately English Tudor-style home that would rise above the rolling hills of both Indiana and Hampton townships to become the site known today as Hartwood Acres. The home resounded with the love and laughter of a prominent Pittsburgh family--Mary Flinn Lawrence; her husband, John; and their two young sons. Richly detailed stables housed the finest horses, which became the centerpiece of numerous equestrian events held on the grounds. Pittsburgh royalty such as the Heinz family visited often, and correspondence from US president Theodore Roosevelt was received on a number of significant occasions. Designed by architect Alfred Hopkins, only the finest appointments would do for the stained glass, gleaming woodwork, and fortified stone that graced the estate.
