Healing and Alzheimer's documents an exploratory Healing study carried out in a UK residential care home for people living with later-stage and advanced dementia.
Using recognised quality-of-life and well-being measures, participant-reported concerns, and careful observation - and comparing residents who received Healing with those who did not - the study examined whether gentle Healing approaches could reduce distress and support comfort alongside routine care.
Residents who received Healing showed reductions in reported concerns and observable distress, while those receiving routine care alone showed no comparable change. Alongside the measured outcomes, carers and practitioners noted moments of calm, emotional expression, relaxation, and renewed connection, including among residents previously considered non-verbal.
The book does not claim cure, reversal, or replacement of medical care. Instead, it explores what these observations may suggest about presence, touch, tone, rhythm, silence, and compassionate care in later-stage dementia, and how carers may strengthen comfort and connection through small, practical actions.
