For over a thousand years, the lives of saints shaped medieval Christianity more profoundly than any texts except the Bible itself. From martyrs facing Roman executioners to mystics experiencing divine visions, from warrior-kings leading crusades to humble monks working miracles, the saints whose stories filled medieval manuscripts, adorned cathedral walls, and inspired countless pilgrims represented humanity's highest spiritual aspirations.
History of Medieval Hagiography takes readers on an epic journey through the sacred biographies that defined an age. This comprehensive study reveals how tales of holy men and women evolved from simple martyrdom accounts into sophisticated literature serving purposes far beyond spiritual edification. Saints' lives legitimized royal dynasties, enriched powerful monasteries, inspired reform movements.
Drawing on extensive primary sources-from the passionate prison diary of Perpetua facing death in the Roman arena to the ecstatic revelations of Catherine of Siena challenging popes-this book illuminates the rich diversity of medieval sanctity. Readers encounter stylite monks atop desert pillars, mendicant friars preaching to urban crowds, and royal saints navigating the tension between gospel peace and political violence. The text explores how gender shaped sanctity's expression, how institutional politics drove canonization processes, and how popular devotion sometimes diverged dramatically from theological orthodoxy.
