by Patricia Edwards Clyne (Author)

Uncover the magic, mystery, and enduring appeal of one of New York's most storied regions. Hudson Valley Tales & Trails invites readers to explore the Hudson Valley through a rich blend of legend, landscape, and lived experience, revealing how history and place continue to shape this remarkable river corridor.

Combining regional folklore with explorations of notable landmarks and inviting destinations, this book offers a thoughtful way to experience the Hudson Valley beyond the surface. Stories passed down through generations are paired with places that can be visited today, encouraging readers to connect narrative, history, and travel in a meaningful way.

Designed for travelers, day-trippers, and armchair explorers alike, Hudson Valley Tales & Trails provides inspiration rather than rigid itineraries. Whether you are drawn to the outdoors, intrigued by local myths, or simply looking for ideas for a memorable outing, the book supports a wide range of interests and travel styles.

Inside Hudson Valley Tales & Trails:
  • Legends & Lore - Engaging stories and regional myths that reveal how imagination and history intertwine throughout the Hudson Valley.
  • Landmarks & Places - Descriptions of significant sites that highlight the cultural, historical, and geographic character of the region.
  • Day Trip Inspiration - Ideas for excursions and short journeys that can be tailored to different schedules, seasons, and interests.
  • Trails & Outdoor Experiences - Opportunities to engage with the landscape, from gentle explorations to more active adventures.
  • A Sense of Place - Context that helps readers understand not just where they are going, but why these places matter.

More than a traditional guidebook, Hudson Valley Tales & Trails emphasizes connection--to the land, to the past, and to the stories that give the region its distinctive character. The Hudson Valley isn't just a destination; it's an experience shaped by centuries of movement, memory, and discovery. This book helps readers find their own path through it.

Author Biography

Patricia Edwards Clyne was a lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, living for many years in Circleville, New York. Her deep personal connection to the region transformed her into one of its most celebrated "yarn-spinners," known for her ability to combine rigorous historical research with the engaging tone of a storyteller.

Before becoming a staple of Hudson Valley literature, Clyne studied journalism at Hunter College in the mid-1950s. During this time, she was a student and close associate of the legendary Edgar Allan Poe scholar Thomas Ollive Mabbott. This early exposure to literary mystery and meticulous scholarship heavily influenced her later work, which often focused on the supernatural, the forgotten, and the legendary.

Clyne authored several influential regional books, including:

  • Orange County: A Chronicle of Three Centuries - Considered a definitive illustrated history of the area.
  • Hudson Valley Tales & Trails - Invites readers to explore the Hudson Valley through a rich blend of legend, landscape, and lived experience.
  • Hudson Valley Faces & Places - A companion to Tales & Trails that focuses on the diverse personalities of the region.
  • Patriots in Petticoats - A historical work highlighting the roles of women in the American Revolution.
  • Caves for Kids in Historic New York - A guide blending geology with local history for younger audiences.

Clyne was a frequent contributor to national and regional magazines, publishing hundreds of articles and short stories. She was widely respected as an authority on Hudson Valley folklore, often sought out by local historical societies to preserve the oral traditions and "historical footnotes" that might otherwise have been lost to time.
