I Ching was among the five classics edited by Confucius, and the philosopher is reputed to have wished for fifty more years of life to study it. It contains the basic text attributed to King Wan and his son, the Duke of Chou, Appendixes usually ascribed to Confucius, an informative Preface by Legge, and extensive footnotes.
Author Biography
Scottish missionary James Legge (1815-97) was a scholar of Sinology most noted for his English translations of ancient Chinese texts. Oxford University's first Professor of Chinese, he wrote many books, including The Life and Teaching of Confucius, The Life and Teaching of Mencius, and The Religions of China.
