Kilmarii is a 10-year-old girl who lived in the Neolithic period, was rejected by her clan, and set to sea on a raft on the Pacific Ocean. She was a "knower" of both animals and humans - able to read minds and communicate mentally. She was a natural hunter, fisher, and warrior. She was found and adopted by the Yutki clan. In this first book in the series, the story is about how trust is earned, jealousy is curbed, and acceptance and bonding are formed. She proves that she will be a loyal and useful member of the clan.
