Sand is time passing in an hourglass. Sand is the shore where the sea endlessly crashes. La arena errante is the wandering sand that drifts through the desert, with no direction or destination. It is the awareness of suspended time--always in motion, never stopping. Poetry captures the fleeting moment, and for José Emilio Pacheco, it is a consciousness of life unfolding with all its imperfections--and all its joys. Wandering sand, just like life itself.
Few poets have explored the awareness of time as deeply as he did. May poetry serve to "suggest that all of this / had at least some meaning."
