If it continues ever further along the path of economic development, we can fear that China will also end up equipping itself with a truly global military power and seek to weigh more heavily on the international chessboard. Is this scenario of a hegemonic China triggering a vast conflict in reaction really likely? Doesn't the very logic of the strategy require Chinese leaders to opt for another path? Will they be able to understand it? And what can be done, everywhere, to stem this dangerous rise in power that could once again tip the world into chaos and war? An outstanding strategist as well as a historian, with a great knowledge of the Asian world, Edward N. Luttwak analyzes in depth what inspires China's recent policy, as well as its cultural biases, its limits, its errors, its clumsiness, and its deceptions too. He reveals all the dangers, if we do not take care, starting today, to react vigorously and adequately. Deciphering all the issues at the heart of the relations that the People's Republic maintains with the United States as well as with Australia, Japan as much as with South Korea or Vietnam, Mongolia or even Russia, it highlights the failures and successes of each. An essential work to better understand the impact of China on the world. Author in particular of The Great Book of Strategy, The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire and The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire, Edward N. Luttwak is one of the most respected specialists in strategy and geopolitics on an international scale. He works in particular at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.
