The Divine Institutes of Lactantius was a vigorous riposte to pagan criticism and persecution of Christianity, which came to a head in the 'Great' Persecution of Diocletian in the early fourth century AD. This edition has been prepared with students and scholars of intellectual history in mind, but it will also appeal to those concerned with ecclesiastical history and patristics, and to anyone interested in tracing the impact of classical philosophy and literature on an early Christian thinker.
Author Biography
Anthony Bowen teaches Greek and Latin at Cambridge University, where he was elected Orator of the University. Recent work of his includes editions with translation of Plutarch's The Malice of Herodotus and Xenophon's Symposium. Peter Garnsey is Professor of the History of Classical Antiquity at Cambridge University. His recent books include Ideas of Slavery from Aristotle to Augustine; Cities, Peasants and Food; Food and Society in Classical Antiquity, and, with C. Humfress, The Evolution of the Late Antique World. He is a coeditor of the Cambridge Ancient History, second edition.
