From the end of the Middle Ages, those writing in a vernacular dared to present original interpretations of the great philosophical, theological, and mystical texts of the Christian tradition. In so doing, they experimented with a form of writing that melds knowledge, wisdom, and subjectivity, and which ushered in early modernity.
